Waifs and Strays Encaustic

This is my first attempt at encaustic painting and it's still a work in progress. I started with a photo we took in an Ottawa County park. This old DeSoto was rusting away in the woods and it fascinated us. I manipulated the color and printed it out on artist's canvas as a base. Then I began applying the beeswax medium to bring out the detail. Finally, I've added a sheet of mica, some vintage ephemera, stamps and acrylic paint.

Waifs Detail

More detail of this encaustic painting, showing some vintage ephemera and an antique pinback button.

Waifs Detail

Sisters Encaustic

This is one of my first encaustic paintings, which is under construction. It's titled "Sisters."

It's made with beeswax based encaustic paints, vegetable ivory buttons and vintage ephemera.

Things Improve Ahead

This woman looked so forlorn, I couldn't help but let her know that things improve ahead.

Sea Deco

The nights were quiet and the breeze came across the banks from the sea.

Frida Redux

Finally finally got my chartpak blender pen. Impossible to find any xylene solvent in this burg, but Dick Blick to the rescue. This is my first attempt at a solvent transfer from a photocopy. Worked like a dream even though the copy was a couple of weeks old! Transferred onto cold press watercolor paper.

Perforators Unite

This limited edition greeting card was created by the bibliophilatelic authority of the Ephemeral Isles to celebrate the capture of the International Perforation Cartel's jewel of power by the Pagrovian people.

It is believed that much can be learned from this jewel and an internal spectrum diagram has been dispatched to the appropriate authorities for their dissection.

True Colours Round Robin Deco

I chose green and golden for my true colours, then I headed to the local yarn shop for something appropriate. The little bits of polished rocks were my treasure from the art market today. The stamps are a food redemption coupon called "gold bond" from my extensive collection of green stamps. I remember collecting S&H green stamps and wishing for goodies from the catalog when I was a girl. I didn't realize there were so many other companies doing this, however.

Cemetery Round Robin Deco

This deco is destined to circulate among some friends in a Graveyard book round robin exchange. The background photo is from our honeymoon in New Orleans. We burned up a lot of digi-film in the Nola cemeteries. The scrap of letter with stamp is from an antique french bill of sale. The text in the upper left was transferred using gel medium to remove words from a transparency sheet.

Playing Card Booklet

This is an impromptu playing card booklet I made for a friend on nervousness.org. My new best friend is waxed linen thread. I'm using it for everything. Love love love it. How did I ever live without it?

Color Study--Blue

The first of my color theory pages in the art journal round robin. I've learned a lot about blue.

I knew this day would come

Here it is. My fourteen year old lovely has created something wonderful. We are going to do round robin decos between the three of us (12 year old, 14 year old and Mom). This is her Galaxy Deco. It's divine! I take no credit, as I was at work this day. They surprised me with decos when I came home.

watercolors in West Virginia

This is how I kept myself occupied on the trip to West Virginia and back. Eleven hours each way and I managed to sketch for a large part of that, becoming totally useless in my role as navigator. That explains the great unexpected tour we took of Columbus. Twice.
