Since I love tactile art, pillows, even mini pillows, appeal to my senses. Art to hold in the hand is my favorite kind. These little pillows can grace a bedside table, get piled in a bowl or with a ribbon can hang on a door handle.
They were created in a multi step process that began with some basic drawings in my sketchbook. The drawings were collaged with old book text and then I thread sketched around the lines with the sewing machine. I scanned the pages and added color with a free software program called paint.net, simply filling in colors with the paint bucket.
I couldn't resist embroidering and BEADING the printed pillows.
Once I was happy with my designs, which you can see below...I printed them out on fabric, then proceeded to stitch up some cute little pillows.
Here are the original unadulterated sketches.
These are the back pages of the scissor drawings, where the back of the stitching was. I just added some quick watercolor washes so that no pages were wasted in my sketchbook!
Finally, I used these same sketches to create some thermofax screens and here I've screenprinted on hand-dyed fabric using white paint. Presto! There are so many uses for your sketches that every minute you spend drawing adds to your collection of fun images to play with over and over again. Consider either scanning them or taking a photo and using them in your art, the way I have with my little scissors sketches.
